Self-Care: What is it and why do you need it now?

Self-care, the delightful art of cherishing oneself! Self-care, the fact that you deserve a some pampering amid the hustle and bustle of daily life. Self-care essentially means taking deliberate actions to improve your well-being, both mentally and physically. It’s about recognizing your own needs and taking steps to meet them.

If you’re like me, the term self-care may seem too buzzwordy or a little fru-fru, but don’t let that turn you off. Yes, people overuse the term so often. Yes, people use self-care as a marketing term to get your money (and maybe even make you feel worse about yourself). Don’t let them diminish your joy in life! Take the reins and take care of your self.

What can this look like in your own life?

When we think about our ‘self’ what do we mean? What makes up our ‘self’? Consider this, we are physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social beings; we live in environments and engage in recreational activities. All of those pieces of ourselves are areas where we can practice self-care.

Physical Well-being:

  • Sleep well. Get 7-9 hours of sleep as often as you can.
  • Get active in your daily life. A short walk now and then works wonders!
  • Eat nutritious food and stay hydrated. Your body is your temple, after all.
  • Take the time to attend medical check-ups to ensure you’re aware of your health status and can take preventive measures before things go too astray.

Mental and Emotional Well-being:

  • Engage in activities that help you unwind, like meditation or yoga, this is a fundamental aspect of self-care. It’s a way to let go of the day’s worries and find inner peace.
  • Set boundaries. Saying no when you need to and setting boundaries in relationships and work is an important form of self-care. It preserves your energy and prevents burnout.
  • Ask for help and reach out to supportive friends, family, or even professionals when needed is a courageous act of self-care.

Spiritual possibilities:

  • Experience gratitude and connect to what you love in life
  • Pray. However this looks for you, if it feels right don’t think twice 🎶
  • Go to church/temple/retreat to interact with people with similar spiritual beliefs (this helps with social self-care, too!)

Modify your environment:

  • Put up some artwork that connects you to happiness. Maybe an old photo or a painting
  • Clean! Don’t underestimate the power of clean, tidy, decluttered space (even if it’s just one room)
  • Add a secret scent. A candle, essential oil, incense, flowers… anything that reminds you to care for yourself (you don’t have to tell anyone the reason for the scent!)

What can happen if we don’t practice self-care?

When we deny ourselves self-compassion or pampering oneself, a series of awful outcomes can unfold. Picture it as a neglected plant; without water and sunlight, it withers away. Similarly, without self-care, our well-being suffers. Here’s a peek into the chaos that can ensue when self-care takes a back seat. Can you relate to any of this?

1. Stress Overload: Without self-care, stress piles up like a mountain of laundry. Your mind becomes a cluttered space, making it difficult to focus and find joy in daily activities. It is very well documented that stress damages your physical health! It’s not just a luxury to reduce stress, it is as important as drinking clean water and getting a good night’s sleep.

2. Mental and Physical Exhaustion: Your mind and body are not machines; they need rest and rejuvenation. Without self-care, exhaustion sets in, leading to decreased productivity and a constant feeling of fatigue.

3. Deteriorating Health: Ignoring self-care often results in poor eating habits, lack of exercise, and inadequate sleep. This trifecta can pave the way for a variety of health issues, from weight gain to weakened immune systems.

4. Strained Relationships: When you’re not taking care of your own needs, it’s challenging to be present for others. This can strain relationships, causing misunderstandings and conflicts leading to more stress and anxiety.

5. Diminished Self-Esteem: Self-care nurtures self-love and boosts self-esteem. Without it, negative self-talk and feelings of unworthiness can creep in, affecting your confidence and overall outlook on life.

6. Decreased Resilience: Self-care acts as a buffer against life’s challenges. Without it, you might find it harder to cope with setbacks, leading to a diminished sense of resilience.

7. Loss of Joy: The simple pleasures of life, like enjoying a sunset or laughing wholeheartedly, fade away when self-care is missing. Life becomes monotonous and devoid of the vibrant colors that self-nurturing brings.

In a nutshell, self-care is the daily practice of showing yourself the love and respect that is your right as a human being. It’s not selfish; it’s essential. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup, so take the time to refill yours. After all, a well-cared-for you can radiate happiness and positivity to others.
